Swarms of Flying Ants Invade Oahu

Posted on October 27, 2011

Swarms of flying ants are annoying some Oahu residents. The flying insects are ants. The ants with wings are the queens and males. They are not termites. University of Hawaii entomologist Paul Krushelnycky says this is mating season for the ants. They are looking to find each other, mate and start new colonies.

The ants come out at the first sign of light. They are also attracted to artificial light, which is why people are finding them swarming around their homes.

Krushelnycky says the flying ants also sting, He says, "They will sting you, not particularly painful but they'll get your attention."

You can read more about the flying ants on hawaiinewsnetwork.com. You can watch a video about the flying ants on Fox News.

The good news for Oahu is the invasion will be over as soon as the ants are done mating.
