NASA Unveils Space Launch System

Posted on September 14, 2011

NASA today announced development of the Space Launch System (SLS) -- an advanced heavy-lift launch vehicle that will help take human exploration beyond Earth's orbit. The SLS rocket will use a liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen propulsion system. The first developmental flight, or mission, is targeted for the end of 2017. NASA released this animation of the SLS. Take a look:

The SLS will carry the carry the Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle - as well as cargo, equipment and science experiments - to Earth's orbit and destinations beyond. It will also be used as a backup for transportation to the International Space Station.

NASA Administrator Charles Bolden said in the announcement, "This launch system will create good-paying American jobs, ensure continued U.S. leadership in space, and inspire millions around the world. President Obama challenged us to be bold and dream big, and that's exactly what we are doing at NASA. While I was proud to fly on the space shuttle, kids today can now dream of one day walking on Mars."

The Orion Multipurpose Crew Vehicle is pictured in the artist's interpretation below. You can see a larger version of the image here.
